About This Tool

Does your report open straight onto a wall of text? A cover page tells readers what the file is before they start. The Add Cover Page tool puts a new title page in front of your PDF.

It suits students, consultants, and office teams who bundle reports or proposals. You type three lines of text, upload a PDF, and download a new file. The look of the cover is fixed, so there is nothing to design.

What Add Cover Page Does

The tool adds one new page at the front of your PDF. Your original pages follow it in the same order.

  • Document Title: the large line on the cover.
  • Author / Organization: printed as "Prepared By:" followed by your text.
  • Subtitle (blank uses today's date): a smaller gray line under the title.
  • Generate Cover & Download builds the file and saves it to your device.

How to Use It, Step by Step

  1. Drop a PDF on the box that reads "Drag & drop PDF to add cover page", or click it and choose a file.
  2. Wait for the status line to read "PDF loaded. Ready to insert cover page."
  3. Type your Document Title. The sample text is "Project Documentation Report", so replace it.
  4. Type the Author / Organization. Replace the sample "Department of Analytics".
  5. Type the Subtitle (blank uses today's date). Replace the sample "Prepared for Executive Board".
  6. Press Generate Cover & Download. Your browser saves a file named pdf-with-cover-page.pdf.

The sample text is real input, so it prints if you leave it. When the build finishes, the status line reads "Done." followed by the page count.

How It Works

The tool starts a brand new PDF with the pdf-lib library. It draws the cover as page 1, then copies every page from your file after it.

Upload PDF→Type Title, Author, Subtitle→Draw Cover Page→Copy Your Pages After It→Download

The cover uses the built-in Helvetica Bold and Helvetica fonts. Nothing is saved on the tool side, so each new run starts from a fresh upload.

What the Cover Looks Like

  • The cover takes the size of your first page, as a viewer shows it. A Letter document gets a Letter cover.
  • If that size is unusable, the cover falls back to A4, which is 595.28 × 841.89 points.
  • A dark navy band fills the top edge. It is 61.89 points tall on an A4 page and scales with other sizes.
  • The title sits in 28 point bold type, left aligned, about halfway up the page. Long text wraps to the page width.
  • The subtitle appears below it in 14 point gray type, above a thin navy rule.
  • The author line sits near the bottom in 12 point type.

If you clear the subtitle box, the tool prints today's date from your device, in the form "October 22, 2026". If you clear the title, the tool shows "Enter a document title first." If you clear the author box, the author line is skipped.

Privacy and File Handling

Your PDF stays in your browser. The code reads it into memory, builds the new file with pdf-lib, and saves it through a browser download. It sends nothing to a server.

The page loads the pdf-lib script from a public code host. That script is only the toolkit, and it does not receive your file.

Example: A Safety Audit Report

Marcus Reed finishes a 12 page safety audit as a US Letter PDF. He drops it on the tool and sees "PDF loaded. Ready to insert cover page." He types the following values.

FieldMarcus Types
Document TitleQ3 Safety Audit
Author / OrganizationReed Consulting
SubtitleOctober 2026

He presses Generate Cover & Download. The status line reads "Done. Cover page added in front of 12 pages. Your download has started." The saved file has 13 pages, and the cover is Letter size like the rest. Page 1 shows "Q3 Safety Audit" with "October 2026" below it. The bottom line reads "Prepared By: Reed Consulting". Pages 2 to 13 are his original report.

Tips for Better Cover Text

Keep the title short. Long text wraps. The title may use 5 lines, and the subtitle and author line 3 each. Past that, the tool asks you to shorten the text.

Stick to letters, numbers, and common punctuation. The built-in fonts cannot draw every character. Emoji or non-Latin letters trigger a message that the built-in Helvetica font cannot print them.

Finish the cover first, then polish the file. The add page numbers to PDF tool works on the finished file. You can also stamp a label with the PDF header tool or the watermark tool.

If the cover is wrong, the remove cover page tool can take it off. To join the covered file with other documents, use Merge PDF. The PDF metadata editor can set the file title. Browse the whole PDF tools hub for more.

Limitations

  • The cover has one design. You cannot change colors or fonts, or add a logo.
  • The sample text in the boxes prints if you do not replace it.
  • The output is a new file made by copying pages. This code copies pages only, not items such as bookmarks or source metadata.
  • It handles one PDF at a time.
  • Password-protected PDFs fail with a message that the PDF is encrypted or password protected. Remove the password first.

FAQs About the Add Cover Page

Does Add Cover Page upload my PDF?

No. The file is read and rebuilt in your browser, then saved to your device. The code sends it to no server.

Can I choose a different cover style?

No. The tool has three text boxes and one fixed layout. The navy band and fonts cannot be changed.

Will the cover match my page size?

Yes, in most cases. The cover copies the size of your first page, including rotation. Your original pages keep their own sizes.

What happens if I leave a box empty?

An empty title stops the build with "Enter a document title first." An empty subtitle prints today's date. An empty author box skips that line.

Why did nothing download?

Look for a red message above the button. It names the cause, such as a protected file, a damaged file, or text the font cannot draw. Fix that and press the button again.

Does the tool change my original file?

No. It builds a new file named pdf-with-cover-page.pdf. Your original stays as it was.

This tool runs in your web browser and may not handle every PDF file, font, or browser the same way. Keep a backup of your original file. Reviewed for general accuracy by Prof. Dr. Khalil Mudassar, PhD.
