About This Tool

Does your US Letter PDF print with odd margins on A4 paper? Paper sizes differ by a few millimeters, and printers often react badly. The Convert PDF to A4 tool scales every page to fit standard ISO A4 paper. That size is 595.28 by 841.89 points.

It suits anyone who sends documents to offices or print shops that use ISO paper. Each page keeps its proportions and sits in the center of the A4 sheet. The sections below explain exactly what that means for your file.

What the Tool Does

The tool has one job and no settings. Every page gets the same fit rule, so the result is predictable.

  • A dashed upload area labeled Drag & drop PDF to convert to A4. Click it to choose a file, or drop a PDF onto it.
  • A status line that starts as Ready.
  • A button named Download A4 PDF, which is always available.
  • A saved file called converted-a4.pdf.

How to Use It, Step by Step

  1. Click the upload area and pick one PDF, or drag the file onto the area.
  2. Wait for the status line to read PDF loaded. Ready for A4 conversion.
  3. Click Download A4 PDF.
  4. Watch the status line change to Working..., then to Done. Every page was scaled to fit A4 and your download has started.
  5. Open converted-a4.pdf and check every page before you print or send it.

The conversion runs when you click the download button, not when you pick the file. If you click it before choosing a file, a red message says Please choose a PDF file first.

How It Works

The tool builds a brand new PDF with one A4 page for each page in your file. It places a copy of each original page on its A4 sheet. It shrinks or enlarges the copy by one scale factor, so nothing is stretched.

Choose PDF>Fit Each Page onto an A4 Sheet>Download A4 PDF

The scale factor is the smaller of two ratios. One is A4 width divided by page width. The other is A4 height divided by page height. The smaller ratio guarantees the whole page fits. One point is 1/72 of an inch.

A Usage Walkthrough

Priya has a one-page US Letter report that measures 612 by 792 points. She loads it and sees the loaded message. Then she clicks Download A4 PDF.

MeasureLetter OriginalScaled PageA4 Sheet
Width612 pt595.28 pt595.28 pt
Height792 pt770.36 pt841.89 pt

The width ratio is 595.28 / 612, or about 0.9727. The height ratio is 841.89 / 792, or about 1.063. The smaller one wins, so her page shrinks to about 97.3 percent.

The scaled page is centered. About 35.76 points of empty paper appear above it and the same amount below it. Nothing is cut off, and her margins stay intact.

What Happens to Your Content

The page is resized as a whole, so text and images shrink or grow together. This has four effects you should check.

  • A page larger than A4 shrinks to fit, and no content is cropped.
  • A page smaller than A4 grows, up to the point where one side touches the edge.
  • When the shapes differ, empty bands appear at the sides or at the top and bottom.
  • Landscape pages get a landscape A4 sheet of 841.89 by 595.28 points. Portrait and square pages get a portrait sheet.

Rotated pages appear upright, just as a PDF viewer shows them. If you want to trim margins before converting, try the crop PDF tool. To set an exact custom size, use the resize PDF pages tool.

Privacy and File Handling

The tool loads pdf-lib, a PDF library that runs in your browser. It reads your file in memory, builds the new file there, and never sends your PDF to a server.

The download uses a temporary browser link. The tool keeps no copy, so you must choose the file again for another run. The page loads the pdf-lib script from a public code host. Your file is never part of that request.

Limitations

  • Links and form fields are not carried over, because only the page content is copied.
  • Bookmarks and annotations are also not kept in the new file.
  • There are no options for margins, fit mode, or other paper sizes.
  • The tool never rotates a page to fit better. It only keeps the page upright.
  • A page that is already A4 is simply placed again at full size.
  • The tool handles one file at a time. It has no batch mode.
  • Very large PDFs may be slow because the browser does all the work.

If something goes wrong, the tool shows a red message and creates no file. A damaged or locked PDF gives This PDF could not be processed. It may be encrypted, password-protected, or corrupted. A failing page gives Page N could not be converted, so no file was created.

Before you rely on the output, compare it with your original. The PDF page size detector reports the paper size of any file. For US paper, see the Letter size converter. To fix a sideways page, use the rotate PDF pages tool. More utilities live in the PDF tools hub.

FAQs About the Convert PDF to A4

Will the tool cut off any of my content?

No. Each page is scaled down or up until all of it fits inside A4. The only change you may see is blank space at the edges.

What size is the output page?

Portrait pages become 595.28 by 841.89 points. That is about 210 by 297 millimeters, or 8.27 by 11.69 inches.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The code processes the file in your browser with pdf-lib. It does not send the file anywhere.

Will my landscape pages turn into portrait pages?

No. Landscape pages stay landscape on a wider A4 sheet. The tool picks the orientation for each page separately.

Can I convert several PDFs at once?

No. The tool loads one file at a time. Choose another file for the next one.

Why do I see an error with my locked PDF?

The tool cannot open a password-protected file. Remove the password in another program first, if you have permission.

This tool runs in your web browser and may not handle every PDF file, font, or browser the same way. Keep a backup of your original file. Reviewed for general accuracy by Prof. Dr. Khalil Mudassar, PhD.
