Both boxes need whole numbers: total questions from 1 to 1,000, and wrong answers from 0 up to the total. The letter is picked from the percentage shown, rounded to one decimal. Scale: A 93 and up, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80, C+ 77, C 73, C- 70, D+ 67, D 63, D- 60, F below 60. Schools differ, so check your own grading scale.

About This Tool

You just walked out of a 50 question test and think you missed six. What percentage is that, and what letter grade does it earn? The Exam Score Calculator answers both from two numbers: the total questions and how many you got wrong.

Students use it to check a quiz or test result. Teachers can use it for quick grading of right or wrong tests where every question counts the same.

What the Calculator Does

The tool scores one test in which every question is worth the same. Two inputs produce three results.

  • Final Score Percentage: correct answers divided by total questions, shown with one decimal.
  • Letter Grade: a grade from A down to F, chosen from fixed cutoffs.
  • Correct Answers: the number right out of the total, with the missed count.

The page shows a result for the sample values when it loads. After that, the results update as you type. The Calculate Score & Grade button and the Enter key refresh them too.

How to Use It, Step by Step

  1. Enter Total Test Questions. The sample value is 50.
  2. Enter Wrong / Missed Answers. The sample value is 6.
  3. Press Calculate Score & Grade, or just watch the results update.
  4. Read the percentage, the letter grade, and the correct count in the three result cards.

Use whole numbers for both fields. Wrong answers can be 0 up to the total. A note under the button repeats the grade scale.

The Exam Score Formula

The tool subtracts the wrong answers from the total to find the correct answers. It then turns that fraction into a percentage.

Total - Wrong÷Total×100=Score %
  • Correct = total questions minus wrong answers. Wrong answers cannot exceed the total, so correct is never below zero.
  • Percentage = correct ÷ total × 100, rounded half up to one decimal.
  • The grade comes from that same one-decimal percentage you see on screen.

The Letter Grade Scale

The tool uses these cutoffs. A score must reach the lower limit to earn the grade.

67%Grade D+

This scale has no A+, so every score from 93% up to 100% is a plain A. A score from 70% to 72.9% reads C-, and 60% to 62.9% reads D-.

How to Read the Results

Final Score Percentage is the main number. It is the share of questions you answered correctly.

Letter Grade maps that percentage onto the table above. Compare it with the scale table above.

Correct Answers shows the right count, the total, and the missed count in brackets. Use it to confirm you typed the right numbers.

Tips for Using Your Score

Every question here carries equal weight. If your exam has sections worth different points, convert them first. The percentage calculator for marks works from points earned out of points available.

Want a result across several courses? The GPA calculator combines grades into a grade point average. The school grade calculator covers whole-course grading.

If you still have a final ahead, the required exam score calculator shows what you need to reach a target. The final grade calculator is another way to plan. See also the math and science calculators hub.

Limitations and Assumptions

  • All questions count equally. There is no partial credit, negative marking, or section weighting.
  • A blank, negative, or too large entry, or wrong answers above the total, shows a message naming the field. The results are hidden until you fix it.
  • Nothing is cut off or filled in for you. Blank boxes are not read as 0 or as 50 questions.
  • The scale is a US plus and minus scale. Your school may use different cutoffs, so check your syllabus.

FAQs About the Exam Score Calculator

How do I calculate a test score from wrong answers?

Subtract the wrong answers from the total, divide by the total, and multiply by 100. For 50 questions with 6 wrong, that gives 88.0%.

Should skipped questions count as wrong?

Yes, for this tool. Add skipped questions to the wrong answers, since only correct answers earn credit.

Does the tool handle negative marking?

No. It subtracts nothing extra for wrong answers. If your test penalizes mistakes, adjust the numbers before entering them.

Why does 20 out of 23 earn a B+?

Check the percentage shown. Twenty correct out of 23 is 86.96%, which displays as 87.0%. The grade uses that same displayed value, so it earns B+.

Can I enter decimals?

No. A decimal such as 12.9, or exponent form such as 1e2, gets a message instead of being rounded. For half-point scoring, use the percentage calculator for marks instead. Total questions can run from 1 to 1,000.

Will my school give the same letter grade?

Maybe not. Schools set their own scales, and some add an A+ or move the cutoffs. This tool uses one fixed scale, so check your syllabus.
