About This Tool

Ever tried to paste a styled web snippet into a forum and watched the formatting vanish? Many message boards reject HTML and expect BBCode instead. The HTML to BBCode Converter rewrites common HTML tags into the square bracket tags that forums understand.

This tool is for forum members, moderators, and writers moving content between platforms. You paste HTML on the left, and the BBCode appears on the right as you type. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

What the Converter Does

The tool swaps a set of known HTML tags for their BBCode equivalents. It works on the text you paste and does not touch any website.

  • HTML Input: the box where you paste or type your HTML markup.
  • Converted BBCode: a read-only box that shows the result right away.
  • HTML Length: a counter for the number of characters you entered.
  • BBCode Output: a counter for the number of characters produced.
  • Clear empties the input box, and Copy BBCode copies the output to your clipboard.

How to Use It, Step by Step

  1. Paste your HTML into the HTML Input box. A sample snippet loads by default.
  2. Watch the Converted BBCode box update as you type. There is no convert button to press.
  3. Check the two counters to compare input size with output size.
  4. Press Copy BBCode to send the result to your clipboard.
  5. Paste the BBCode into your forum post or message board editor.
  6. Press Clear when you want to start over with an empty box.

How the Conversion Works

The converter reads your HTML with the browser's own parser. It walks each tag in order and writes a matching BBCode tag for the known ones. Any tag with no match is dropped, but its inner text stays.

<strong>text</strong>→[b]text[/b]

These are the main rules the tool applies:

HTML TagBBCode Output
strong, b[b] ... [/b]
em, i[i] ... [/i]
u[u] ... [/u]
del, s[s] ... [/s]
a href[url=link] ... [/url]
img src[img]link[/img]
span or font with color[color=value] ... [/color]
blockquote[quote] ... [/quote]
pre or code[code] ... [/code]
ul with li items[list] with [*] rows
ol with li items[list=1] with [*] rows
bra line break

Worked Example

Priya runs a gaming forum and wants to post a short promo line. She pastes this HTML into the input box:

<strong>Save 20% today</strong> on <a href='https://example.com'>all items</a>.

The tool reads 79 characters of HTML and returns 66 characters of BBCode. The output box shows this line:

PartInputOutput
Bold phrase<strong>Save 20% today</strong>[b]Save 20% today[/b]
Link<a href='https://example.com'>all items</a>[url=https://example.com]all items[/url]
Full resultwhole snippet[b]Save 20% today[/b] on [url=https://example.com]all items[/url].

Priya copies the BBCode and pastes it straight into her forum post. The bold text and the link both work there.

How to Read the Results

Converted BBCode is the text you paste into a forum. It updates with every keystroke, so no button is needed.

HTML Length counts the characters you typed. BBCode Output counts the characters produced. BBCode tags are often shorter, so the output count is usually smaller.

The Status label now reacts to your input. It reads Empty in gray when the box is blank. It reads Converted in green once you add text.

Tags It Handles and Tags It Skips

The tool handles bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, links, images, colored text, quotes, and code blocks. It also converts both bullet lists and numbered lists. It covers the tags most forums support.

Some tags have no BBCode match. Headings like h1 and h2 keep their text but lose their size, since BBCode has no heading tag. Tables keep their cell text with row breaks, but gain no grid markup.

Colored text converts from an inline color style on a span. It also converts from a font tag that sets a color value. To tidy messy HTML before you convert, try the HTML beautifier tool first.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Watch for color set by a CSS class instead of an inline style. That kind of color will not convert, so the text stays plain. Add an inline color style if you need the color to carry over.

Remember that headings and tables lose their visual layout. Their words remain, but the heading size and the table grid do not. Rework those parts by hand if a forum needs them.

If you need the reverse direction, the BBCode to HTML converter turns forum tags back into web markup. For a different target, the HTML to Markdown converter produces Markdown instead. To decode standalone HTML entities on their own, use the HTML entity decoder. More utilities live in the developer tools hub.

Limitations and Assumptions

  • The converter reads known tags only. Unusual or custom tags are dropped, though their inner text is kept.
  • Headings and tables have no BBCode tag, so their layout is lost while the words remain.
  • A span colored only by a CSS class does not convert, since the tool reads inline styles only.
  • The tool converts one text box at a time. There is no batch mode for many snippets at once.
  • Different forums support different BBCode tags, so always preview your post before you publish.

FAQs About the HTML to BBCode

Does the Tool Decode HTML Entities?

Yes. A coded ampersand or a coded less-than sign turns back into its plain symbol in the output. You get the real character, not the entity code.

What Happens to Plain Text With Angle Brackets?

The parser keeps it. A phrase such as a less-than sign between words survives as text. It is not mistaken for a tag and removed.

Can I Convert a Link Without Quotes?

Yes. The tool reads the web address whether or not quotation marks wrap it. The link still becomes a url tag with its address.

What Does a Code Block Become?

A pre tag becomes a code tag, with or without an inner code tag. A lone inline code tag also becomes a code tag. You do not get a doubled tag.

Do Nested Lists Stay Nested?

Yes. An inner list sits inside the outer list in the result. Both levels keep their items and their row markers.

Why Did the Copy Button Not Work?

Copying needs a secure connection and clipboard permission. If either is missing, a short message appears, and you can select the output by hand.
