How big is your lawn, really? The house, driveway, and beds all shrink the grass you actually seed or sod. The Lawn Area Calculator finds the net grass area, then sizes an acreage and a sod order.
It is built for homeowners and landscapers planning sod, seed, or fertilizer. You pick a yard shape, enter the dimensions, subtract the hard surfaces, and read the net area.

What the Calculator Does
The tool finds the grass area after deductions. Four inputs feed three results, shown after you press the button.
- Net Lawn Area: the grass area in square feet, after you subtract hard surfaces.
- Acreage Equivalent: the same area in acres, with two decimals.
- Sod Pallets Needed: the pallet count at 450 square feet per pallet, rounded up.
There is one button, Calculate Net Grass Area. The tool also runs once when the page loads.
How to Use It, Step by Step
- Pick a Yard Shape: Rectangle, Circle, or Triangle. The labels change to match.
- Enter the first dimension. It is length, diameter, or base, depending on the shape.
- Enter the second dimension, width or height, when the shape needs it.
- Enter House / Driveway Deductions (sq ft) for surfaces that are not grass.
- Press Calculate Net Grass Area and read the three result cards.
The Lawn Area Formula
The tool finds the gross area for your shape, subtracts the deductions, then converts to acres and sod pallets. One acre is 43,560 square feet.
Gross Area-Deductions=Net Area/ 450=Sod Pallets
- Rectangle area = length times width.
- Circle area = 3.1416 times the radius squared, where radius is half the diameter.
- Triangle area = half of base times height.
- Net area = gross area minus your deductions.
- Acres = net area divided by 43,560. Pallets = net area divided by 450, rounded up.
Worked Example
Gloria has a rectangular lot that is 120 feet by 80 feet. Her house and driveway cover about 2,000 square feet.
| Result | Calculation | Output |
| Gross Area | 120 x 80 | 9,600 sq ft |
| Net Lawn Area | 9,600 - 2,000 | 7,600 sq ft |
| Acreage Equivalent | 7,600 / 43,560 | 0.17 Acres |
| Sod Pallets Needed | 7,600 / 450, rounded up | 17 Pallets |
With the default 100 by 60 lot and a 1,200 square foot deduction, the tool shows 4,800 square feet, 0.11 acres, and 11 pallets.
How to Read the Results
Net Lawn Area is the grass you will seed or sod. It drives every material estimate that follows.
Acreage Equivalent is useful for larger lots and for comparing against listing or survey figures.
Sod Pallets Needed assumes 450 square feet per pallet. Pallet sizes vary, so confirm with your supplier.
Shapes, Deductions, and Sod Tips
Pick the shape that best fits your yard. For a circle, you enter only the diameter, and the width field hides itself.
Measure hard surfaces like the house, driveway, patio, and beds, then total them for the deduction. This gives a truer grass figure than the lot size alone. A pacing or tape measure works fine for most yards.
Order a little extra sod for trimming along curves and edges. Fresh sod should be laid the same day it arrives.
For odd yards, split the space into rectangles and triangles, then add the results. To size fertilizer or seed for that area, the lawn seed calculator and the fertilizer calculator help.
If you prefer rolls over pallets, the sod area calculator works from the same area. For soil under new sod, see the topsoil volume calculator, and for bed mulch the mulch calculator. Browse more yard tools in the home and construction calculators hub.
Limitations and Assumptions
- The tool offers three simple shapes: rectangle, circle, and triangle. There is no freeform or multi part shape.
- All inputs are in feet, and results are in square feet, acres, and pallets. There is no metric option.
- The circle result treats an oval as a circle of that diameter, so oval yards are approximate.
- Deductions are a single total you supply. The tool does not itemize them.
- Sod pallets assume 450 square feet each, with no waste added for cuts.
- A blank, zero, or negative dimension shows an alert and sets the results to N/A. If deductions exceed the yard area, the tool asks you to lower them.
FAQs About the Lawn Area Calculator
How do I measure an odd shaped lawn?
Split it into rectangles and triangles. Run each piece, then add the net areas together.
What does the deduction field do?
It subtracts hard surfaces like the house and driveway from the gross area. That leaves the real grass area.
How many square feet are in an acre?
One acre is 43,560 square feet. The tool divides your net area by that number to show acres.
How big is a pallet of sod?
This tool assumes 450 square feet per pallet. Suppliers vary, so confirm the coverage before ordering.
Can I enter an oval yard?
Choose the circle option and enter the longest width as the diameter. The result is a close estimate, not exact.
Does the tool work in meters?
No. It uses feet only. Convert metric measurements to feet before you enter them.
