About This Tool

Is your paycheck right after a long week? Extra hours often pay more per hour, but the math is easy to get wrong. The Overtime Pay Calculator adds regular hours, time and a half, and double time. You get one weekly gross pay figure.

It also shows the pay for overtime hours, the true overtime premium, and your blended hourly rate. Hourly workers can check a paycheck. Small business owners can estimate what a busy week will cost.

What the Calculator Does

You enter a rate and three groups of hours. The tool prices each group and shows four result cards.

  • Total Gross Paycheck: regular pay plus time and a half pay plus double time pay.
  • Pay for Overtime and Double-Time Hours: all pay earned on those hours, with a split for each.
  • Overtime Premium Only: just the extra above your normal rate on those hours.
  • Blended Average Hourly Rate: gross pay divided by all hours, shown with the hour count.
  • Calculate Total Weekly Paycheck button: refreshes the results after you edit a field.

How to Use It, Step by Step

  1. Enter your pay per hour in Base Hourly Pay Rate ($).
  2. Enter up to 40 hours in Regular Hours Worked (max 40). Use the rate field for $5 to $500.
  3. Enter hours paid at time and a half in Overtime Hours (1.5x Pay), from 0 to 60.
  4. Enter hours paid at twice your rate in Double Time Hours (2.0x Pay), from 0 to 40.
  5. Press Calculate Total Weekly Paycheck.

You decide which hours go in which box. The tool does not move hours between boxes for you.

The Overtime Pay Formula

Each group of hours gets its own multiplier. The three amounts add up to gross pay.

Regular Hours × Rate+OT Hours × Rate × 1.5+DT Hours × Rate × 2=Gross Pay
  • Total hours = regular + overtime + double time hours.
  • Pay for Overtime and Double-Time Hours = overtime hours × rate × 1.5 + double time hours × rate × 2.
  • Overtime Premium Only = overtime hours × rate × 0.5 + double time hours × rate × 1.
  • Blended rate = gross pay ÷ total hours, or 0 when total hours are 0.

The first card adds the full pay for extra hours. The premium card keeps only the extra amount above your normal rate.

Worked Example

Marcus is a warehouse lead who earns $30 an hour. One week he works 40 regular hours, 5 overtime hours, and 3 double time hours.

ResultCalculationOutput
Regular pay40 × $30$1,200.00
Overtime pay5 × ($30 × 1.5)$225.00
Double time pay3 × ($30 × 2)$180.00
Total Gross Paycheck$1,200 + $225 + $180$1,605.00
Pay for Overtime and Double-Time Hours$225 + $180$405.00
Overtime Premium Only5 × ($30 × 0.5) + 3 × $30$165.00
Blended rate$1,605 ÷ 48 hours$33.44 / hr across 48 hrs

The first overtime card shows $405.00, the total pay on those 8 hours. The Overtime Premium Only card shows $165.00, which is the true extra over his normal rate. The 5 overtime hours add $75, and the 3 double time hours add $90.

At the starting values ($24, 40, 8, and 2), gross pay is $1,344.00. Pay for extra hours is $384.00, and the premium is $144.00. The blended rate is $26.88 per hour across 50 hours.

How to Read the Results

Total Gross Paycheck is pay before taxes and deductions. Taxes will lower it, so use the take-home pay calculator to estimate your net check.

Pay for Overtime and Double-Time Hours comes with a split into the 1.5x part and the 2x part. Read it as the full pay earned on extra hours. Overtime Premium Only is the part above what those hours would pay at your normal rate.

Blended Average Hourly Rate shows what each hour was worth on average. It always lands above your base rate when you work overtime. It is useful for comparing a long week with a normal one.

Overtime Rules in the United States

Federal law, called the FLSA, requires time and a half after 40 weekly hours for most hourly workers. It does not require double time. Double time and daily overtime come from employer policy, union contracts, or some state rules. California is one state with daily overtime.

Some roles are exempt from overtime, often salaried managers and certain professionals. Check your own status before counting on extra pay. This tool applies the multipliers you choose and does not test whether the law requires them.

If you want a yearly picture of hourly pay, try the hourly to salary calculator. Employers can see the wider cost of a worker with the payroll calculator. Workers who pick up extra shifts can set goals in the savings goal calculator. More tools are in the finance and business calculator hub.

Limitations and Assumptions

  • The tool does not know your state or your employer's rules. You choose which hours get which rate.
  • The tool enforces limits. Rate runs $5 to $500, regular hours 0 to 40, overtime 0 to 60, and double time 0 to 40.
  • Results cover one week of gross pay with no taxes, tips, or bonuses.
  • A blank, negative, or out-of-range field shows a red message, and all four cards read N/A.
  • If you enter overtime hours with fewer than 40 regular hours, a note appears. The tool still pays the hours exactly as entered.
  • Results update only when you press the button.

FAQs About the Overtime Pay Calculator

How do I calculate time and a half?

Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5, then multiply by the overtime hours. At $20 an hour, one overtime hour pays $30.

Does federal law require double time?

No. The FLSA requires only time and a half after 40 hours for covered workers. Double time comes from employer policy, union contracts, or some state rules.

What is the difference between the two overtime cards?

Pay for Overtime and Double-Time Hours is the full pay on those hours, including your normal rate. Overtime Premium Only is just the extra part above that rate.

What is a blended hourly rate?

It is your gross pay divided by all hours worked. It shows the average value of each hour in the week.

Can I use it for a two-week pay period?

Yes, if you enter the combined hours. Remember that federal overtime counts each workweek on its own, so split hours by week first.
