About This Tool

How many pages are across that folder of PDFs? The PDF Page Counter reads each file and reports the page count in one table. It also adds up the totals across every file you drop in.

This tool is for anyone checking page limits, print jobs, or document sets. It only reads your files and reports numbers; it does not change them. All of the counting runs in your web browser.

What the PDF Page Counter Does

The tool counts pages and sorts them by orientation. It builds a summary table and four total cards.

  • Upload: drop one or more PDFs, or click to select them.
  • Per file row: name, size, page count, portrait, landscape, reading time, and status.
  • Total cards: total files, combined pages, portrait pages, and landscape pages.
  • Export CSV: save the table as a spreadsheet file.
  • Load Sample Batch and Reset: try sample rows or clear the table.

How to Use It, Step by Step

  1. Drag one or more PDFs onto the box, or click to select them.
  2. Wait while the tool reads each file.
  3. Read the per file rows in the summary table.
  4. Check the four cards for combined totals.
  5. Click Export CSV to save the numbers.
  6. Click Reset to clear the table and start again.

How It Works

The tool reads each PDF in the browser with pdf-lib. It gets the page count and measures each page width and height. Pages wider than they are tall count as landscape, and the rest count as portrait.

Upload PDFs->Read and Count Pages->View Table and Totals

The tool loads files even when they are encrypted, so most still count. A file it cannot read shows the status Encrypted / Error with a page count of zero.

Each new upload adds to the table rather than replacing it. The totals above the table grow as you add more files. Use Reset when you want to start a fresh count.

A Real Example

Aisha drops three PDFs to check a print order. The table lists each file with its size and page count. The row for her catalog shows 112 pages, all portrait.

The cards tally the set, with Total Combined Pages adding every file together. The status reads Done. 3 file(s) counted. She clicks Export CSV and saves pdf-page-count-summary.csv for her records. Later she clicks Reset to clear the table.

How to Read the Results

The table and cards answer different questions about your files.

  • Total Pages: the exact page count for that file.
  • Portrait and Landscape: how many pages are tall versus wide.
  • Est. Time (2 min/page): a rough guess of 2 minutes per page.
  • Status: Success for a clean read, or Encrypted / Error if it failed.

Privacy and File Handling

This tool reads your PDFs inside your web browser using pdf-lib. It never sends your files to a server or outside service. The CSV export is also built on your device as a local download.

Because the counting is local, your files stay with you and no copy is kept. To inspect page sizes in more detail, the PDF page size detector reports exact dimensions. To check just the file size, the PDF file size viewer shows it on its own.

Portrait, Landscape, and Reading Time

The orientation check compares each page width and height. A page is landscape only when it is wider than it is tall, so square pages count as portrait. The check now reads the page rotation too, so a turned page is labeled by its displayed orientation.

The reading time uses a flat 2 minutes per page. It is a rough planning number, not a measure of actual words. A page of dense text and a near empty page get the same estimate here.

For a word based estimate, try the PDF reading time calculator or the PDF orientation detector.

Limitations and Assumptions

  • The tool reads and reports only; it does not edit your files.
  • Uploading the same file twice adds two rows and counts it twice.
  • Reading time is a fixed 2 minutes per page, not a text based count.
  • A file it cannot read shows Encrypted / Error and zero pages.
  • Very large files or large batches may take longer to read.

FAQs About the PDF Page Counter

Can I count pages in several PDFs at once?

Yes. Drop or select many files, and each gets its own row with combined totals above.

Does the tool upload my files?

No. It reads them in your browser with pdf-lib. Nothing is sent to a server.

Why does the page count affect my internet connection?

It does not. The counting is local, so your connection speed does not matter.

How is the reading time figured out?

The tool multiplies the page count by 2 minutes. It is a rough guess, not a word count.

What does Encrypted / Error mean?

The tool could not read that file. Its row shows zero pages and that status label.

What can I do with the CSV export?

You can open pdf-page-count-summary.csv in a spreadsheet. Find more options in the PDF tools hub.

This tool runs in your web browser and may not handle every PDF file, font, or browser the same way. Keep a backup of your original file. Reviewed for general accuracy by Prof. Dr. Khalil Mudassar, PhD.
