Is a 2:00 per 100 meters swim fast? Swimmers measure speed this way because lap times are short and pool lengths are fixed. A clear per-100 number lets you compare a sprint and a long swim.
The Swimming Pace Calculator takes a distance in meters and your total time. It returns your pace per 100 meters, the number of pool lengths, and your average speed in km/h. It suits lap swimmers, triathletes, and coaches.

What the Calculator Does
The tool converts a swim distance and time into three numbers.
- Pace per 100 Meters: minutes and seconds per 100 m.
- Pool Lengths Needed (rounded up): how many pool lengths cover the distance, such as "60 Lengths (25 m pool)".
- Average Speed: kilometers per hour with two decimals.
- A Calculate Swimming Pace button. Results show on page load and update as you type, change a field, or press Enter.
How to Use It, Step by Step
- Enter Swim Distance (Meters). The sample is 1,500, and the field range is 50 to 10,000.
- Enter Total Time Minutes. The sample is 30, and the field allows 0 to 300.
- Enter Total Time Seconds. The sample is 0, and the field allows 0 to 59.
- Choose Pool Length: 25 Meters (Short Course), 50 Meters (Olympic Long Course), or 25 Yards (22.86 m, US Yard Pool).
- Press Calculate Swimming Pace and read the cards.
Always enter distance in meters. If you swam 1,000 yards, convert it first: multiply by 0.9144 to get meters.
The Swim Pace Formulas
Pace per 100 m is total seconds divided by distance, times 100. Lengths are distance divided by pool length, rounded up. Speed is distance in kilometers divided by time in hours.
Total Seconds÷Meters×100=Pace per 100 m
- Pace (seconds per 100 m) = (minutes × 60 + seconds) ÷ meters × 100.
- Lengths = distance ÷ pool length, rounded up to the next whole number.
- Speed (km/h) = (meters ÷ 1,000) ÷ (total seconds ÷ 3,600).
- The 25 Yards option uses a pool length of 22.86 meters.
- Pace is rounded to whole seconds first, so a result such as 1:60 cannot appear.
Worked Examples
Mia swims 1,500 meters in 30 minutes. Ben swims 400 meters in 7 minutes 20 seconds. Chloe swims 100 meters in 1 minute 45 seconds.
| Swimmer | Pool | Pace / 100 m | Lengths | Speed |
| Mia, 1,500 m, 30:00 | 25 m | 2:00 | 60 | 3.00 km/h |
| Mia, same swim | 50 m | 2:00 | 30 | 3.00 km/h |
| Ben, 400 m, 7:20 | 25 m | 1:50 | 16 | 3.27 km/h |
| Chloe, 100 m, 1:45 | 25 m | 1:45 | 4 | 3.43 km/h |
For Mia, 1,800 seconds divided by 1,500 meters is 1.2 seconds per meter. Times 100 gives 120 seconds, or 2:00. Ben's 440 seconds over 400 meters gives 110 seconds, or 1:50.
How to Read the Results
A lower pace number means a faster swim. Pace is the number most coaches and swim clubs use. Average speed in km/h is easier to compare with running or cycling.
The lengths card counts one trip across the pool, not round trips. In many US pools a lap means down and back, so divide by 2 for that count. It rounds up, so a partial length counts as a full one.
Pool Length and Yard Pools
Pool length only affects the lengths card. Pace and speed do not change when you switch pools. The yard pool option assumes a 25 yard pool, which is 22.86 meters long.
The card then reads 66 Lengths (22.86 m pool) for 1,500 meters. Pace is still per 100 meters, not per 100 yards. Open water and drafting can change real times, so use pool swims for steady comparisons.
To compare swim effort with other sports, try the pace calculator for runs. The pace to speed calculator converts a pace into speed. Track fitness with the VO2 max calculator.
To plan effort by pulse, use the target heart rate calculator. For recovery checks, see the resting heart rate calculator. More tools are in the health and fitness calculators hub.
Limitations and Assumptions
- The result is a general estimate. Turns, push-offs, and rest breaks change real pace.
- Distance is always read as meters. There is no per-100-yard pace.
- Distance must be 50 to 10,000 meters, minutes 0 to 300, and seconds 0 to 59. Other values show N/A and a message.
- A blank distance or a total time of zero also shows N/A.
- Choosing 25 Yards changes only the lengths divisor, not the distance unit.
- Check with a doctor before hard swim training if you have heart or health conditions.
FAQs About the Swimming Pace Calculator
How do I calculate swim pace per 100 meters?
Divide your total time in seconds by the distance in meters, then multiply by 100. For 1,500 meters in 30 minutes, that is 2:00.
What is a good swim pace?
It depends on skill, stroke, and goals. Beginners often log slower paces than club swimmers. Track your own trend over several weeks.
Does pool length change my pace?
No. Pool length only changes the number of lengths shown. Your pace per 100 meters stays the same.
Can I enter yards?
Not directly. The distance field is in meters. Convert yards to meters first by multiplying by 0.9144.
Is a length the same as a lap?
Not in the US, where a lap is down and back. The tool counts lengths, so halve the number for laps.
Is the speed shown in km/h?
Yes. Average speed is always in kilometers per hour. Swim speeds are small numbers, usually around 2 to 4 km/h for lap swimmers.
