About This Tool

A used car with a low sticker price can still cost far more than you planned. Loan interest, insurance, and repairs all add up over the years you own it. The Used Car Cost Calculator turns those pieces into one total, so you can budget before you sign.

Enter the price, down payment, loan rate and term, monthly insurance, and yearly repairs. The tool shows your monthly loan payment, total interest, extra costs, and the all-in cost across the loan term. It is made for shoppers comparing two cars or checking a monthly budget.

What the Calculator Does

The tool updates live and rounds each dollar result to the nearest whole dollar.

  • Total Cost of Ownership: down payment, all loan payments, insurance, and repairs over the term. The label follows your term, such as "Total 5-Year Cost of Ownership" at 60 months.
  • Monthly Loan Payment: the standard fixed rate payment on the amount you borrow.
  • Total All-In Monthly Cost: loan payment plus insurance plus one twelfth of yearly repairs.
  • Total Loan Interest Paid: everything you pay beyond the amount borrowed.
  • Total Insurance + Maintenance: those two costs added across the full term.
  • Copy Cost Analysis and Reset buttons.

The Ownership Cost Formula

The loan uses the standard monthly payment formula. Then the tool adds your upfront and running costs.

Down Payment+Payment × Months+Insurance + Repairs=Total Cost
  • Amount borrowed P = price - down payment. The down payment cannot exceed the price.
  • Monthly rate r = annual rate ÷ 100 ÷ 12.
  • Payment = P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n - 1), where n is the months.
  • If the rate is 0, payment = P ÷ n.
  • Interest = payment × n - P.
  • Insurance total = monthly insurance × n. Repairs total = yearly repairs ÷ 12 × n.

Worked Example

Jordan finds a used SUV for $22,000 and puts $4,000 down. This example loan is 6.9% for 60 months. Insurance is $135 a month, and Jordan budgets $900 a year for repairs.

ResultCalculationOutput
Amount Borrowed$22,000 - $4,000$18,000
Monthly Loan PaymentPayment formula, r = 0.575%, n = 60$356 / Mo
Total Loan Interest$356 × 60 - $18,000$3,334
Insurance + Maintenance$8,100 + $4,500$12,600
Total Cost of Ownership$4,000 + $21,334 + $12,600$37,934
All-In Monthly Cost($21,334 + $12,600) ÷ 60$566 / Mo

The card reads "Total 5-Year Cost of Ownership": about $37,934 for the $22,000 car. Interest alone adds $3,334. Each card is rounded on its own, so parts can differ from the total by $1.

How to Read the Results

Monthly Loan Payment is only the lender's bill. Total All-In Monthly Cost is closer to what leaves your account each month, because it adds insurance and repairs.

Total Loan Interest Paid shows the price of borrowing. A shorter term or a larger down payment usually shrinks it.

Total Cost of Ownership includes your down payment. It does not subtract what the car might sell for later.

Costs the Tool Leaves Out

A car also loses value every year you drive it. Our car depreciation calculator estimates that loss, which can outweigh interest. Fuel is another large cost, and the fuel cost calculator prices your trips.

Before you pick a car, test the payment against your income. The vehicle loan affordability calculator shows how much you can borrow. The car loan calculator lets you compare rates and terms in more detail.

Thinking about an electric model? The EV versus petrol cost calculator compares running costs.

Limitations and Assumptions

  • The tool leaves out sales tax, title and registration fees, fuel, parking, and depreciation. A note under the results says so.
  • Insurance and repairs stay flat. Real repair bills often rise as a car ages.
  • The term must be a whole number from 12 to 84 months, and the rate from 0 to 25 percent.
  • Price must be at least $1. A blank, negative, or out-of-range entry shows a red message, and every result reads N/A.
  • A down payment above the price shows an error. A down payment equal to the price is allowed.
  • If your browser blocks the clipboard, the copy button reads "Copy blocked".

FAQs About the Used Car Cost Calculator

What does total cost of ownership mean here?

It is every dollar you pay over the loan term: down payment, loan payments, insurance, and repairs. It excludes fuel, taxes, fees, and resale value.

How is the monthly loan payment calculated?

The tool uses the standard fixed rate formula on the amount borrowed. With a rate of 0, it simply divides the loan by the number of months.

Is the all-in monthly cost the same as my loan payment?

No. It adds monthly insurance and one twelfth of yearly repairs to the loan payment. The down payment is not included in it.

How much should I budget for repairs on a used car?

It depends on age, mileage, and the model. The tool starts with an example of $1,200 a year. Use a quote from your mechanic or past bills for a better figure.

Does a bigger down payment lower the total cost?

Usually yes, because you borrow less and pay less interest. Insurance and repairs stay the same, so only the loan portion changes.

What loan terms does the tool accept?

Any whole number of months from 12 to 84. A blank or out-of-range term shows an error instead of a default. Terms not divisible by 12 are labeled in months, such as 30-Month.
