About This Tool

Every hot shower, load of dishes, and warm-water laundry cycle uses energy before the water reaches you. For many homes, the water heater is one of the larger items on the energy bill. The Water Heating Cost Calculator estimates what that hot water costs each month and year.

You enter daily hot water use in gallons, choose a heater type, and set the temperature rise. The tool shows yearly and monthly cost, daily energy, yearly gallons, and heat pump savings. It is useful for homeowners comparing heaters and for anyone trimming a utility budget.

What the Calculator Does

Results update live as you change any input. Each heater option has a built-in efficiency and a built-in example energy price.

  • Estimated Annual Water Heating Cost: yearly cost, rounded to whole dollars.
  • Monthly Heating Cost: the yearly cost divided by 12.
  • Daily Energy Used by Heater: the fuel the heater uses each day, in kWh or kWh equivalent.
  • Annual Hot Water Output: daily gallons times 365.
  • Heat Pump Potential Savings (vs Selected Heater): the yearly dollar savings of a heat pump versus your selected heater.
  • Copy Cost Summary and Reset buttons.

How to Use It, Step by Step

  1. Enter your household's hot water use in Daily Hot Water Usage (Gallons). The default is 64, and the range is 10 to 1,000.
  2. Choose a heater in Fuel Type & Efficiency. There are two electric and two natural gas options.
  3. Enter Temp Rise (°F: Target minus Inlet), from 30 to 90. Heating 50°F inlet water to 120°F is a 70°F rise.
  4. Read the results, then switch heater types to compare costs.
  5. Press Copy Cost Summary to save the yearly and monthly cost with the example prices.

The four heater options use these built-in values:

Heater OptionEfficiency FactorExample Price Used
Electric Tank0.92$0.16 per kWh
Electric Heat Pump3.2$0.16 per kWh
Natural Gas Standard0.62$1.40 per therm
Natural Gas Tankless0.82$1.40 per therm

The Water Heating Cost Formula

Heating one pound of water by 1°F takes 1 BTU. A gallon of water weighs about 8.33 pounds, so the tool starts there.

Gallons × 8.33 × Temp Rise÷Efficiency Factor×Energy Price=Daily Cost
  • Heat needed (BTU per day) = gallons × 8.33 × temperature rise.
  • Energy input (BTU) = heat needed ÷ efficiency factor.
  • Electric cost = energy input ÷ 3,412.14 BTU per kWh × $0.16.
  • Gas cost = energy input ÷ 100,000 BTU per therm × $1.40.
  • Annual cost = daily cost × 365. Monthly cost = annual cost ÷ 12.

With the defaults, 64 gallons at a 60°F rise needs 31,987.2 BTU a day. A standard electric tank then costs $595 a year.

Worked Example Comparing Heaters

The Okafor family uses about 45 gallons of hot water a day. Their inlet water is 50°F and the tank is set to 120°F, a 70°F rise.

Heater OptionAnnual CostMonthly CostDaily Energy UsedHeat Pump Savings
Electric Tank$488 / year$40.68 / mo8.36 kWh / day$348 / year
Electric Heat Pump$140 / year$11.70 / mo2.40 kWh / dayN/A (Heat Pump Selected)
Natural Gas Standard$216 / year$18.02 / mo12.40 kWh / day$76 / year
Natural Gas Tankless$164 / year$13.63 / mo9.38 kWh / day$23 / year

Annual hot water output is 16,425 Gallons for every option. At these example prices, the heat pump is the cheapest choice, and gas tankless comes second.

How to Read the Results

Estimated Annual Water Heating Cost is the main figure for budgeting. It rounds to whole dollars, so small changes may not move it.

Monthly Heating Cost spreads that yearly cost evenly. Real bills often run higher in winter, when inlet water is colder.

Daily Energy Used by Heater is the energy the heater consumes, not the heat delivered. Gas options show their fuel use converted to kWh, so you can compare all four on one scale.

Heat Pump Potential Savings (vs Selected Heater) subtracts a heat pump's yearly cost from your heater's yearly cost. Each side is priced with its own fuel. With Electric Heat Pump selected, it reads N/A (Heat Pump Selected).

Ways to Cut Water Heating Costs

Using less hot water lowers cost in direct proportion. Low-flow showerheads, shorter showers, and cold-water laundry all reduce daily gallons.

Lowering the tank setting shrinks the temperature rise. In the tool, dropping the Okafor rise from 70°F to 60°F cuts each option's cost by about one seventh.

A new heater is a bigger step. Compare the yearly savings with the price difference using the payback period calculator. The ROI calculator shows the same choice as a percent return.

Check your real electric rate with the cost per kWh calculator. Then fit the result into a monthly budget.

Limitations and Assumptions

  • Energy prices are fixed at $0.16 per kWh and $1.40 per therm. They are examples you cannot edit.
  • Efficiency factors are fixed for each option. Your heater's rating may differ.
  • Standby heat loss from the tank and pipes is not counted separately.
  • Propane, oil, and solar heaters are not included.
  • Gallons must be 10 to 1,000, and the rise must be 30°F to 90°F.
  • A blank or out-of-range entry shows a message, and every result reads N/A.

FAQs About the Water Heating Cost Calculator

How many gallons of hot water does a household use per day?

It varies with household size and habits. Count showers, laundry, and dishwashing loads, then estimate gallons for each. The 64 gallon default is only a starting point.

How do I find my temperature rise?

Subtract your incoming water temperature from your tank setting. Inlet water is colder in winter, so the rise and cost go up then.

Can I enter my own electricity or gas price?

No, the prices are built in as examples. Scale the result yourself: if your kWh rate is twice $0.16, the electric cost doubles.

Why are heat pump savings smaller for gas heaters?

At the example prices, gas costs less per unit of heat than electricity. With the defaults, a heat pump saves $424 a year over an electric tank. It saves only $93 over standard gas and $28 over tankless gas.

Why is the heat pump efficiency above 1?

A heat pump moves heat from the surrounding air into the water. It can deliver more heat than the electric energy it uses.
