About This Tool

Is 20 percent cashback better than 12 percent off? The cap often decides it. The Cashback vs Discount Calculator compares an instant discount with a cashback offer on the same purchase.

It shows the net cost of each option and names the one that saves more. Use it before buying an appliance, laptop, or any item where a store offers one deal or the other.

What the Calculator Shows

  • Discount Option Net Price and Discount Option Savings: what you pay with the instant discount, and what it removes.
  • Cashback Option Net Cost and Cashback Received: the price after the cashback arrives, and the cashback itself.
  • A headline that names the winner: Cashback Deal Wins, Instant Discount Wins, or Both Deals Are Equivalent. The dollar gap appears in the line beneath it.
  • Copy Comparison and Reset buttons.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the Original Price before any offer.
  2. Type the Instant Discount (%), the percent taken off at checkout.
  3. Type the Cashback Offer (%), the percent paid back after the purchase.
  4. Enter the Max Cashback Limit ($). Leave it empty when the offer has no cap. A 0 means a real $0 cap.
  5. Read the headline and the four result cards. A red message appears if a value is out of range. Reset restores 200, 15, 18, and 50.

The Formula Behind the Comparison

Both offers are figured on the original price. The cap applies only to cashback.

Price x Cashback %capped atMax Limit=Cashback Received
Price x Discount %=Discount Savings

In symbols, discount savings = P x d. Cashback = min(P x c, cap) when a cap is entered, otherwise P x c. Net price is P minus each saving. The larger saving wins, and savings within one cent count as a tie.

Worked Example: A Capped Offer

Owen wants $320 headphones. Store A takes 12 percent off at checkout. Store B pays 20 percent cashback, capped at $40.

ResultInstant DiscountCashback
Raw saving$38.40$64.00
Saving after the cap$38.40$40.00
Net cost$281.60$280.00

Cashback wins by $1.60. Without the cap, cashback would save $64.00 and win by $25.60. The $40 cap removed most of its edge.

How the Cap Changes the Winner

Using Owen's offers, the discount saves $38.40. That sets a tipping point: a cap below $38.40 favors the discount, and a cap above it favors cashback.

Max Cashback LimitCashback ReceivedResult
$25$25.00Discount wins by $13.40
$38.40$38.40Tie
$40$40.00Cashback wins by $1.60
Empty (no limit)$64.00Cashback wins by $25.60
$0$0.00Discount wins by $38.40

Always read the offer terms for the cap. It is the number most shoppers miss.

How to Read the Results

Compare the two net figures first. The lower net cost is the cheaper deal on paper.

The cashback figure is a refund, not a markdown. You pay the full price today and receive the money later, so your cash is tied up until it arrives.

Before You Choose a Deal

Tax is the hidden factor. The tool ignores it, but a discount lowers the taxable price while cashback usually does not.

On Owen's $320 purchase at 8 percent tax, the discount cuts tax by about $3.07. That is more than the $1.60 cashback lead, so the discount would cost about $1.47 less overall.

Also check how long cashback takes to post, and whether returns cancel it. To see tax on a price, use the sales tax calculator. To stack codes on a cart, try the coupon savings calculator.

For card rewards over a year of spending, use the cashback rewards calculator. To price a single markdown, open the sale price calculator or the discount calculator. More tools sit in the finance and business hub.

Limitations and Assumptions

  • The tool compares one discount against one cashback offer. It does not combine them.
  • Tax, shipping, minimum spend rules, and the delay before cashback arrives are not modeled.
  • Cashback is figured on the original price, though some programs pay on the post-tax or post-discount amount.
  • Only a blank cap means no limit. A cap of 0 gives $0 cashback, and a negative cap shows a red message.
  • The original price must be above $0, and both percents must be 0 to 100. Other values show a red message and clear the results.

FAQs About the Cashback vs Discount Calculator

Is cashback or an instant discount better?

Whichever saves more dollars after any cap. Instant discounts save you cash today. Cashback can win with a higher percent, but caps, delays, and conditions can erase that edge.

What does a cashback cap do?

A cap sets the most cashback you can earn on one purchase. The tool takes the smaller of the percent amount and the cap. Leaving the cap empty means no limit, while a cap of 0 means no cashback at all.

What happens if both deals save the same amount?

If the two savings differ by less than one cent, the headline calls the deals equivalent. Then pick on other factors, such as payout speed and return rules.

Why does the tool use the original price for both offers?

It keeps the comparison simple and fair. Some cashback programs pay on the amount after tax or after a discount. Check your program terms for the exact base.

Does the calculator include sales tax?

No. Tax is left out of both options. A discount lowers the taxed price, so including tax can shift a close result toward the discount.

Can I compare two cashback offers with it?

Not directly. It compares one discount against one cashback offer. Run the tool twice with each offer, or use the cashback rewards calculator for card spending.
