About This Tool

A jacket is marked 30% off, and your state adds sales tax at the register. What will you actually pay? The Discount Calculator answers that by taking the original price, the discount percent, and the sales tax rate.

It shows the sale price before tax, the final price after tax, and the money you save. It works for shoppers comparing deals and for store owners checking a promotion.

What the Calculator Does

Enter three numbers and press the button. The tool returns three results.

  • Final Price (After Tax): what you pay at the register once tax is added to the sale price.
  • Total Money Saved: the dollar amount taken off the original price.
  • Discounted Pre-tax Price: the original price minus the discount, before any tax.

The tool runs once on page load with sample figures. It updates again only when you press Calculate Savings.

How to Use It, Step by Step

  1. Type the sticker price into Original Price ($).
  2. Type the percent off into Discount (%). For half off, enter 50.
  3. Type your local rate into Sales Tax Rate (%). Enter 0 if no tax applies.
  4. Press Calculate Savings.
  5. Read the final price first, then the savings and the pre-tax price. A red message with N/A cards means an input needs fixing.

Sales tax rates differ by state and by city, and some items are exempt. Check your own receipt or local rate before you enter a number.

The Discount Formulas

The tool applies the discount first and the tax second. Tax is charged on the lower sale price.

Original Price-Discount+Tax=Final Price
  • Money saved = original price × discount percent ÷ 100.
  • Pre-tax price = original price - money saved.
  • Final price = pre-tax price × (1 + tax percent ÷ 100).

The original price must be above 0, and the discount must be from 0 to 100. Otherwise a red message appears and the cards show N/A.

Worked Example

Aisha is buying a stand mixer with a list price of $249.99. The store takes 30% off, and her local sales tax is 6.5%.

ResultCalculationOutput
Total Money Saved$249.99 × 30%$75.00
Discounted Pre-tax Price$249.99 - $75.00$174.99
Final Price (After Tax)$174.99 × 1.065$186.37

Aisha pays $186.37 at the register, not $174.99. The tax adds about $11.37 on the sale price. The tool keeps full precision and rounds only the numbers it shows.

Check the sample numbers too. A $120 item at 25% off with 8% tax saves $30.00, costs $90.00 before tax, and totals $97.20.

How to Read the Results

Final Price (After Tax) is the number to compare with your budget. It is what your card is charged, if the tax rate you entered is right.

Total Money Saved counts only the discount. It does not include tax. Because tax is charged on the lower price, a discount also trims a little tax.

Discounted Pre-tax Price matches the price tag after the markdown. It helps you compare two stores before you think about tax.

Tax and Discount Order

Most US stores take the discount first, then add tax on the reduced price. This tool follows that order. Some coupons are treated differently, so the receipt is the final word.

If you want a tool built around a flat sale, try the sale price calculator. To work out tax on its own, use the sales tax calculator.

Smart Ways to Compare Deals

A bigger percent is not always a better deal. A 20% discount on a $200 item saves more than 40% off a $30 item. Always compare final dollars, not percents.

When you hold a coupon, the coupon savings calculator helps you weigh it. For card rewards, the cashback versus discount calculator compares a price cut with points back.

Buying in quantity? The bulk discount calculator handles tiered prices. If you run the store, the markup calculator shows how a sale affects your profit. More tools sit in the finance and business calculator hub.

Limitations and Assumptions

  • The original price must be above 0, up to $1,000,000,000. A blank, 0, or negative price shows a red message and N/A in all three cards.
  • The tool applies one discount only. It cannot stack coupons or tiered offers.
  • The discount must be from 0 to 100, and the tax rate from 0 to 1,000. Values outside those ranges, including negatives, are rejected with a message.
  • A blank discount or tax field shows a message. Type 0 if you mean none.
  • It uses one tax rate for the whole price. It does not handle tax-exempt items or mixed baskets.
  • Dollar amounts round to two decimals. The cards round separately, so subtracting them can differ by a cent from what a receipt shows.

FAQs About the Discount Calculator

How do I calculate a percent discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percent and divide by 100. That gives the dollars saved. Subtract it from the original price to get the sale price.

Is sales tax added before or after the discount?

In most US stores, tax applies to the discounted price. This tool follows that order. Manufacturer coupons and store coupons can be taxed differently in some states.

Why is my final price higher than the sale price?

The final price includes sales tax. The pre-tax card shows the marked-down price, and the final card adds your tax rate on top of it.

Does the tool show the tax amount by itself?

No. It shows the final price, the money saved, and the pre-tax price. Subtract the pre-tax price from the final price to find the tax.

Can I use this to mark down my own products?

Yes. Enter your list price and planned discount, and set tax to 0. The pre-tax card shows the new selling price.

What does it mean when the discount is 100%?

The price drops to $0.00, and the final price is $0.00 as well. You save the full original price, and no tax is due on a zero price.
