How much does it cost to win one new customer? That number is your customer acquisition cost, or CAC. This customer acquisition cost calculator adds ad spend, sales and marketing pay, and software fees. It then divides the total by the customers you gained.
It also compares that blended cost with an ad-only cost. A payback estimate shows how many months a customer needs to repay it. Startup founders, marketers, and agency owners can use it to check whether growth spending makes sense.

What the Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) Calculator Does
The tool takes six inputs and shows seven results. Everything updates as you type, and reset restores the starting numbers.
- Blended CAC per customer, shown as the main result.
- Paid ad CAC, which uses only advertising spend.
- Total acquisition spend across all three cost groups.
- CAC payback period in months.
- The share of spend going to ads, salaries, and software.
- A currency symbol menu with dollar, euro, pound, rupee, and yen options.
- A copy button that saves a text summary.
How to Use the Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) Calculator
- Pick a symbol in Currency Symbol. It changes labels only and does not convert amounts.
- Enter Total Advertising & Marketing Spend for the period.
- Enter Sales & Marketing Salaries for the same period. Include the share of pay tied to winning customers.
- Enter Software, Tools & Agency Fees for that period.
- Enter New Customers Acquired in the same period.
- Enter Monthly Gross Profit Per Customer (ARPU x Margin). Use profit, not revenue, for the most useful payback figure.
- Read the results. If a box is invalid, a red message appears and every result shows a dash.
The CAC Formulas
All three cost groups use one time frame, such as a month or a quarter. Blended CAC divides every cost by new customers. Paid ad CAC divides only the ad line.
Ads + Salaries + Tools÷New Customers=Blended CAC
- Total spend = ad spend + salaries + software and tools.
- Blended CAC = total spend ÷ new customers.
- Paid ad CAC = ad spend ÷ new customers.
- CAC payback (months) = blended CAC ÷ monthly gross profit per customer.
- Each share = that cost group ÷ total spend × 100.
Worked Example: A Small SaaS Team
Gideon runs a small scheduling app. Last quarter he spent $9,000 on ads, $14,000 on sales and marketing pay, and $3,000 on tools and agency help. He gained 125 customers, each worth $60 a month in gross profit.
| Result | Math | Output |
| Total spend | $9,000 + $14,000 + $3,000 | $26,000.00 |
| Blended CAC | $26,000 ÷ 125 | $208.00 |
| Paid ad CAC | $9,000 ÷ 125 | $72.00 |
| Payback period | $208 ÷ $60 | 3.5 Months |
| Cost mix | 9,000 / 14,000 / 3,000 of 26,000 | 34.6% / 53.8% / 11.5% |
The true price of a customer is $208, nearly three times the $72 ad figure. People often miss that gap when they look at ad reports alone.
How to Read Your Results
- Blended CAC Per Customer: the full cost of winning one customer, including people and tools.
- Paid Ad CAC (Direct): ad spend per new customer. It is always lower than or equal to blended CAC.
- Total Acquisition Spend: the sum of the three inputs.
- CAC Payback Period: months of margin needed to repay the blended CAC. Many subscription teams aim for under 12.
- Marketing, Salaries, and Software Percentages: where the money goes. The three can total 99.9% or 100.1% because of rounding.
Blended CAC vs Paid Ad CAC
Paid ad CAC is useful for judging one channel. Blended CAC is better for board reports and pricing choices, because it counts the whole team. Both divide by all new customers, including ones who arrived through referrals or search.
To judge value, compare blended CAC with what a customer brings in over time. The customer lifetime value calculator covers that side, so this guide does not repeat it. For one campaign, the CPA calculator gives cost per action.
Ways to Lower Your CAC
- Raise the share of visitors who buy. Measure it with the conversion rate calculator.
- Cut the cost of each early contact. The cost per lead calculator shows where leads get pricey.
- Shift budget toward channels with better returns, using the ROAS calculator.
- Offer referral rewards, since referred customers often cost less to win.
Limitations and Assumptions
- Costs and customers must cover the same period. A mismatch makes CAC wrong.
- New customers must be a whole number of at least 1. A blank, zero, negative, or fractional count shows a message.
- Spend and gross profit boxes must be 0 or more. A blank spend box counts as $0.
- A blank or zero gross profit shows payback as "N/A". When total spend is 0, the three share cards also show "N/A".
- The gross profit field expects margin, not revenue. Revenue instead of margin makes payback look too short.
- Currency choice changes only the symbol. Numbers always use US formatting and no exchange rate.
- Paid ad CAC divides ad spend by all new customers, including organic ones.
- Reset restores the starting numbers and the dollar symbol. Copy Summary copies the results, or says "Fix inputs first."

FAQs About the Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) Calculator
What costs should I include in CAC?
Include ads, sales and marketing pay, commissions, software, agency fees, and content costs. Leave out service and support costs for existing customers.
What is a good CAC payback period?
Many subscription firms aim to recover CAC within 12 months. Faster is safer for cash flow. Longer can work with low churn and strong funding.
Why is blended CAC higher than paid ad CAC?
Blended CAC adds salaries and tools to ad spend. Paid ad CAC counts only ads, so it understates what you actually pay for each customer.
Does the currency menu convert my numbers?
No. It only swaps the symbol shown on inputs and results. Enter all amounts in one currency yourself.
Which period should I use?
Pick a month or a quarter and use it for every field. Because sales often lag spending, a quarter smooths out the delay better than a single month.
How does CAC relate to customer lifetime value?
CAC is what you pay to win a customer. Lifetime value is what that customer returns. Compare the two to see if growth spending pays off.
