About This Tool

Is working nights worth the lost sleep? Many employers add a premium for overnight hours, plus a flat bonus for each shift. The Night Shift Pay Calculator shows what those extras add up to each week and each year.

Enter your base pay, a night premium per hour, and an optional stipend per shift. Add your weekly night hours and shifts. The tool returns gross weekly pay, yearly pay, and your effective hourly rate.

What the Calculator Does

Results update live as you change any of the five inputs.

  • Gross Weekly Night Shift Pay: base pay, night premium, and stipends added together.
  • Effective Night Hourly Rate: weekly gross divided by night hours.
  • Annualized Night Earnings (52 Weeks): weekly gross multiplied by 52.
  • Weekly Premium and Stipends: the night premium plus the stipends, shown as extra pay.
  • Base Hours Portion: the part of your pay that comes from base rate alone.
  • Copy Night Pay Breakdown and Reset buttons.

How to Use It, Step by Step

  1. Enter your normal hourly wage in Standard Base Pay ($/hr).
  2. Enter the extra hourly amount in Night Hourly Premium ($/hr). Use 0 if you get none.
  3. Enter any flat bonus in Night Shift Stipend ($/shift).
  4. Enter Night Hours Per Week and Shifts Worked Per Week.
  5. Read the weekly total, then the four cards below it.
  6. Use Copy Night Pay Breakdown to copy the summary, or Reset to restore the sample figures.

The premium is a dollar amount per hour. If your employer pays a percentage, convert it to dollars first.

The Night Shift Pay Formula

Pay has three parts. Two depend on hours, and the stipend depends on shifts.

Base × Hours+Premium × Hours+Stipend × Shifts=Weekly Gross
  • Effective hourly rate = weekly gross ÷ night hours.
  • Annual earnings = weekly gross × 52.
  • Weekly premium and stipends = (premium × hours) + (stipend × shifts).

Worked Example

Tanya works the overnight crew at a distribution center. She earns $24.50 an hour, a $3.00 night premium, and a $20 stipend. She works 32 night hours across 4 shifts.

ResultCalculationOutput
Base Hours Portion$24.50 × 32$784.00
Night Premium$3.00 × 32$96.00
Stipends$20 × 4$80.00
Weekly Premium and Stipends$96 + $80+$176.00 Extra
Gross Weekly Pay$784 + $176$960.00 / Week
Effective Hourly Rate$960 ÷ 32$30.00 / Hour
Annualized Night Earnings (52 Weeks)$960 × 52$49,920.00 / Yr

Tanya's night extras lift her $24.50 base to an effective $30.00 an hour. That is a gain of $5.50 an hour.

How to Read the Results

Effective Night Hourly Rate is the best number for comparing a night job with a day job. It folds the stipend into a single hourly figure.

Weekly Premium and Stipends shows how much of your pay exists only because you work nights. Subtract it to see your daytime equivalent.

Annualized Night Earnings (52 Weeks) assumes you work the same week for all 52 weeks. Unpaid time off will lower the real total.

Are Night Premiums Required?

Many people assume night work pays more by law. In the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act does not require a night or shift premium. It requires 1.5x overtime after 40 hours in a workweek for most covered workers.

Night premiums come from employer policy, union contracts, or the labor market. Hospitals, factories, and warehouses often offer them to fill late shifts. Your offer letter shows the exact amount.

To compare offers, run your day pay through the hourly to salary calculator. Percent-based premiums fit better in the shift differential pay calculator. Weeks with extra hours belong in the overtime pay calculator. To see pay after taxes, use the take-home pay calculator. You can also plan around it with the budget planner. More options are in the finance and business calculator hub.

Limitations and Assumptions

  • Results are gross pay before taxes, health premiums, and retirement contributions.
  • Hours and shifts are separate inputs. The tool warns about odd pairs, such as 0 shifts with a stipend, but still shows results.
  • Limits apply. Hours run from 0 to 168 and shifts from 0 to 14. Pay rates cap at $1,000 and the stipend at $10,000.
  • Overtime is not included. Hours over 40 are paid at your base plus premium, with no 1.5x multiplier. The tool shows a note when hours pass 40.
  • The annual figure always multiplies by 52 weeks.
  • Every box needs a number. A blank, negative, or text entry shows a red message, and the results show "-".
  • If night hours are 0, the effective rate shows "N/A (no night hours)" even when a stipend adds pay.

FAQs About the Night Shift Pay Calculator

How much more do night shift workers make?

It varies by employer and industry. Many add a few dollars an hour or a percentage. Enter your own premium and stipend to see your exact gain.

Is night shift pay required by law?

Not under federal law. The FLSA requires 1.5x overtime after 40 hours in a workweek, but no shift premium. Night pay comes from employer policy or union contracts.

What is a shift stipend?

A stipend is a flat bonus paid per shift worked, no matter how many hours it lasts. This tool multiplies it by your shifts per week.

Why is my effective hourly rate higher than my base plus premium?

The stipend raises it. The tool spreads the stipend across your night hours. A $20 stipend on 8 hours adds $2.50 to the hourly rate.

Does the calculator include overtime?

No. It treats every night hour at base plus premium. Use an overtime tool if you work more than 40 hours in a week.

Can I use a percentage premium here?

Not directly. Convert the percentage to dollars per hour first, or use the shift differential calculator, which offers a percent option.
