About This Tool

Does your long PDF have a table of contents panel, and what is inside it? The PDF Bookmark Viewer reads a file's real outline and shows it as an indented, numbered list. It helps students, editors, and researchers check a document's structure without opening a full reader.

The tool only reports what it finds. It does not edit your file, add bookmarks, or let you click a title to jump to a page.

What the Tool Does

The tool has one job. It lists the bookmark titles stored in the PDF you choose.

  • Drag & drop PDF to inspect bookmarks: the upload area. You can drop a file on it, or click it to open the file picker.
  • Bookmark Hierarchy: the heading of the results box that appears after the scan.
  • A status line under the upload area, which starts as "Ready".
  • One row per bookmark, with nested bookmarks indented under their parents.

There are no buttons, filters, search fields, or download options. The list stays on screen until you pick another file.

How to Use It, Step by Step

  1. Open the page and find the box that says "Drag & drop PDF to inspect bookmarks".
  2. Drop one PDF on the box, or click it and choose the file. The picker accepts PDF files only.
  3. Wait while the status line reads "Reading the bookmark outline...".
  4. Read the numbered list under "Bookmark Hierarchy".
  5. To check another file, drop or pick a new PDF. The old list is cleared first.

How It Works

Your browser reads the file into memory, and the pdf.js library opens it. The tool then asks pdf.js for the document outline and walks through every level. For each entry, it looks up the page that the bookmark points to.

Choose PDF→pdf.js reads the outline→Find each page→Indented numbered list

This is a true outline read, not a text search. Compressed outlines and special characters in titles are handled. The document title stored in the file's information is not listed.

A Walkthrough With a Thesis File

Priya is a graduate student with a 120-page thesis called thesis-final.pdf. Her advisor says the bookmarks panel looks empty, and she wants to check.

She drops the file on the upload box. The status line changes to "Found 15 bookmarks across 2 levels." The list shows lines such as "1. Introduction (page 9)" and "1.1. Research Questions (page 11)".

She can see that the five chapters and their sections all exist. The panel problem is probably in her reader, not in the file.

How to Read the Results

Each row shows one bookmark, in the same order as the outline inside the file.

  • Numbers: outline numbers such as "2." for a chapter and "2.1." for a section under it. They are not page numbers.
  • Titles: the bookmark text, with extra spaces tidied. An empty title appears as "(untitled)".
  • Indentation: each nested level moves right by one step, so chapters and sections are easy to tell apart.
  • (page N): the page the bookmark points to. It is missing when the bookmark has no page target.
  • Status line: a total, such as "Found 1 bookmark across 1 level."

Messages You May See

If the file has no outline, the box says "No bookmarks or outline entries found in document." The status line then reads "Scan complete. 0 bookmarks found." This means the PDF really has no outline.

If the file is encrypted, password protected, or damaged, a red message appears: "This PDF could not be read. It may be encrypted, password protected, or damaged. Unlock or repair the file, then try again." Use the Unlock PDF tool first if you know the password.

A file that does not end in .pdf gets a separate message asking you to choose a PDF.

Limitations and Assumptions

  • Bookmarks that only open a web address or run a script show no page number.
  • The tool cannot ask for a password, so protected files are not read.
  • The tool cannot copy, search, export, or click through the list.
  • Very large outlines look up pages one at a time and may take a moment.
  • The tool keeps no copy of your file. Pick it again after a page reload.

Your File Stays in Your Browser

The page reads your file with your browser's own file tools, and the outline is read on your device. We found no code that sends the file to a server. The page loads the pdf.js library and its worker from cdnjs, a public code host. That download does not include your document.

Other tools cover nearby jobs. The Extract PDF Bookmarks tool and the PDF Outline Viewer cover similar ground. To remove an outline, use Remove PDF Bookmarks. To read the pages, open the Online PDF Viewer. To see title and author fields, try the PDF Metadata Viewer. Browse more in the PDF tools hub.

FAQs About the PDF Bookmark Viewer

Can I click a bookmark to jump to that page?

No. The list is plain text on screen. It has no links, and it does not open the document.

Does the tool change my PDF?

No. It reads the file and shows a list. Your original file is never edited or saved back.

Why does it say no bookmarks when my reader shows a panel?

The tool lists only the outline stored in the file. If the file has none, the box reports none, even if your reader shows other side panels.

Why does a bookmark have no page number?

Its target may be a web address or a script, not a page. The tool still lists the title.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

The code we reviewed processes the file in your browser and does not send it anywhere. Only the pdf.js script is downloaded from a code host.

Can I save the list?

There is no save or copy button. You can select the text on screen and copy it by hand.

This tool runs in your web browser and may not handle every PDF file, font, or browser the same way. Keep a backup of your original file. Reviewed for general accuracy by Prof. Dr. Khalil Mudassar, PhD.
