About This Tool

How many gallons of paint does one bedroom need? Buy too little and you stop mid-wall, and buy too much and you waste money. The Room Paint Cost Calculator turns your room size into wall area, gallons, and a material cost.

You enter the room length, width, ceiling height, price per gallon, coats, and the area of doors and windows. It suits homeowners, renters, and small contractors planning a repaint. The paint price in this guide is an example, so use the tag price at your store.

What the Calculator Does

The results update as you type. The tool paints the four walls only, and it rounds up to whole gallons.

  • Total Estimated Paint Material Cost: whole gallons times the price per gallon.
  • Gallons Required: the cans to buy, with the exact gallon figure beside it.
  • Paintable Wall Area: wall area after door and window deductions.
  • Total Coat Coverage Area: paintable area times the number of coats.
  • Cost Per Sq Ft Surface: total cost divided by paintable wall area.
  • Copy Paint Estimate and Reset buttons.
  • A red message and N/A results when an input is blank or out of range.
  • A short note under the results that states the 350 square feet assumption and walls-only scope.

How to Use It, Step by Step

  1. Measure the room and enter Room Length (ft) and Room Width (ft).
  2. Enter the wall height in Ceiling Height (ft).
  3. Enter the cost of one gallon in Price Per Gallon ($).
  4. Enter Number of Coats as a whole number from 1 to 4. Two coats is common for a color change.
  5. Add up the area of doors and windows and enter it in Doors & Windows Deductions (Sq Ft).
  6. Read the results. Press Copy Paint Estimate for a summary, or Reset for sample values.

A standard interior door is roughly 20 square feet, and a medium window is roughly 15. Measure yours for a better number.

Length and width must be 1 to 1,000 feet, and height must be 1 to 50 feet. Price per gallon can be $0 to $1,000.

The Paint Formula

The walls form a loop around the room, so the tool uses the perimeter times the height. It then subtracts openings and multiplies by coats.

Perimeter × Height-Doors & Windows=Paintable Walls
  • Gross wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height.
  • Paintable wall area = gross wall area - door and window area (the deduction must stay below the gross area).
  • Coat area = paintable wall area × coats.
  • Exact gallons = coat area ÷ 350. The tool assumes one gallon covers 350 square feet.
  • Cans = exact gallons, rounded up. Cost = cans × price per gallon.

Worked Example

Jamal is repainting a home office that is 14 feet long, 11 feet wide, and 8 feet high. He plans two coats and expects 35 square feet of door and window area. His example price is $42.00 per gallon.

ResultCalculationOutput
Gross Wall Area2 × (14 + 11) × 8400 sq ft
Paintable Wall Area400 - 35365 Sq Ft
Total Coat Coverage Area365 × 2730 Sq Ft
Gallons Required730 ÷ 350 = 2.09, rounded up3 Cans (2.1 Gal exact)
Total Estimated Paint Material Cost3 × $42.00$126.00 Estimated
Cost Per Sq Ft Surface$126.00 ÷ 365$0.35 / Sq Ft

Jamal needs about 2.1 gallons, so he buys 3. The unused paint is useful for touch-ups.

How to Read the Results

Gallons Required shows two numbers: the cans to buy and the exact gallons. The gap between them is your leftover paint.

Paintable Wall Area is the surface that gets paint on one coat. Total Coat Coverage Area is that surface times your coats, and it drives the gallon count.

Total Estimated Paint Material Cost covers paint only. Cost Per Sq Ft Surface divides that cost by the wall area. It helps you compare a basic paint with a premium one.

Tips for Estimating Paint Cost

Rough or dark walls soak up more paint, so a real job can need extra. A primer coat or a bold color change often calls for a third coat. Check the coverage printed on the can and compare it with the 350 square feet the tool uses.

Paint is only one part of a project. Roll supplies, tape, and labor into the project cost calculator for a fuller budget. Add the total to your budget planner so the repaint fits your monthly plan.

Shop smart before you buy. Check a sale with the discount calculator. The coupon savings calculator shows what a store coupon is worth. Comparing a gallon with a five-gallon bucket? The unit price calculator shows the cost per gallon. More tools are in the finance and business calculator hub.

Limitations and Assumptions

  • The tool paints walls only. Ceilings, trim, baseboards, and closets are not counted.
  • It uses a fixed coverage of 350 square feet per gallon, and you cannot change it.
  • Primer, supplies, tax, and labor are not included in the cost.
  • It assumes you buy whole gallons. Quarts and five-gallon buckets are not priced separately.
  • Coats must be a whole number from 1 to 4. A value such as 2.9, 0, or 10 is rejected with a message, not rounded.
  • Blank or out of range values show a red message and N/A results. The tool never guesses a value.
  • A deduction as large as the wall area shows a message with both numbers instead of a result.
  • The copy button prints nothing and shows Fix inputs while an input is invalid.

FAQs About the Room Paint Cost Calculator

How much area does a gallon of paint cover?

Many cans list about 350 to 400 square feet per gallon. The tool uses 350, which gives a slightly cautious estimate.

Do I need to paint the ceiling too?

This tool counts walls only. For the ceiling, multiply length by width and add a second estimate of that area.

How many coats of paint do I need?

Two coats cover most color changes well. One coat may work when you repaint the same shade over clean walls.

Should I subtract every window and door?

Yes, subtract the larger openings. Small openings are often skipped on purpose, which leaves a little extra paint for touch-ups.

Why does the tool round up to whole gallons?

Stores sell paint in set can sizes, so you pay for the full can. Rounding up also protects you from running short.

Does the cost include primer and supplies?

No. The total covers only the paint at the price you enter. Add primer, brushes, rollers, and tape to your own budget.
