All gallon, quart, pint, cup and fluid ounce options are US liquid measures (1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L). They are not imperial (UK) units: an imperial pint is about 568.26 mL, while a US pint is 473.18 mL. Enter a value from 0 to 1,000,000,000,000. Results show up to 4 decimal places, or 4 significant digits when the answer is below 1.

About This Tool

Is a US gallon the same as a liter? No. A US gallon is about 3.785 liters, so a liter is a little more than a quart. The Volume Converter does this math for you.

The tool converts between eight volume units, from milliliters to cubic meters. It helps cooks, students, aquarium owners, and travelers who meet recipes or labels in a different system.

What the Volume Converter Does

The tool converts one number at a time from one volume unit to another. It has three inputs, one button, and two results.

  • Volume Value: the number you want to convert. The sample value is 1.
  • From Unit and To Unit: two menus with the same eight choices. They are US Gallons, Liters, Milliliters, US Fluid Ounces, US Cups, US Pints, US Quarts, and Cubic Meters (m³).
  • Convert Volume: a button that reruns the conversion. The tool also updates as you type.
  • Converted Volume: the answer in the unit you chose.
  • Base Volume (Liters): your input expressed in liters, shown as a check value.

How to Use It, Step by Step

  1. Type a number into Volume Value. The sample is 1.
  2. Open From Unit and pick the unit you already have. The sample is US Gallons.
  3. Open To Unit and pick the unit you want. The sample is Liters.
  4. Watch the result update as you type or change a menu. Pressing Convert Volume or Enter does the same.
  5. Read Converted Volume first, then check Base Volume (Liters).

The Volume Conversion Formula

The tool first converts your value to liters. It then divides by the size of the target unit in liters.

Value×From Factor÷To Factor=Converted Volume
  • Liters = value × liters in one From Unit.
  • Converted volume = liters ÷ liters in one To Unit.

Conversion Factors Used

These are the exact factors in the tool, and the math uses exact fractions. All the customary units are US liquid measures.

Worked Examples

Priya buys a 750 mL bottle and wants fluid ounces. The table shows five runs and exactly what the tool displays.

InputFromToConverted VolumeBase Volume
1US GallonsLiters3.7854 L3.7854 L
2US CupsMilliliters473.1765 mL0.4732 L

1Cubic MetersUS Gallons264.1721 US gal1,000 L

For the bottle, 750 × 0.001 gives 0.75 liters. Dividing by 0.0295735295625 gives 25.36 fluid ounces, shown as 25.3605 US fl oz.

How to Read the Results

Converted Volume shows up to four decimal places from 1 upward. The tool trims trailing zeros, so 4.0000 appears as 4.

Below 1, it keeps four significant digits instead. The unit after the number is the menu symbol: US gal, L, mL, US fl oz, US cup, US pt, US qt, or m³.

Base Volume (Liters) uses the same rounding rule. Both results use US thousands separators, so 1,000 shows a comma.

US Units Versus Imperial Units

Every gallon, quart, pint, cup, and fluid ounce here is a US liquid unit. The imperial gallon used in the UK is about 4.546 liters, which is larger. A UK pint is about 568 mL, against 473 mL for a US pint.

The menu labels all five of them "US", and a note under the result repeats this. If your recipe or fuel figure is British, these results will not match.

A fluid ounce measures volume, not weight. Water weighs about one kilogram per liter, and the weight converter handles mass units. For oven or fridge settings, use the temperature converter.

Tank or box sizes start from lengths, so the length converter and area converter help first. Other units are in the general unit converter and the unit and time converters hub.

Limitations and Assumptions

  • The tool offers eight units. It has no tablespoons, teaspoons, cubic feet, or imperial units.
  • The value must be a number from 0 to 1,000,000,000,000. Zero is allowed and gives 0.
  • A blank, negative, or too large entry shows a red message, and both results read N/A.
  • Results are exact to the digits shown, but the display is rounded. Cooking amounts are only as exact as your measuring tools.

FAQs About the Volume Converter

How many liters are in a US gallon?

One US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters. The tool shows 3.7854 L for a value of 1.

How many US quarts are in a liter?

One liter is about 1.0567 US quarts. Choose Liters to US Quarts with a value of 1 to see 1.0567 US qt.

How many cups are in a gallon?

A US gallon holds 16 cups. Choose US Gallons to Cups with a value of 1, and the tool shows 16 US cup.

How many fluid ounces are in a gallon?

A US gallon holds 128 fluid ounces. The tool shows 128 US fl oz for a value of 1.

How many milliliters are in a US cup?

One US cup is about 236.5882 milliliters. Metric measuring cups often use 250 mL, so recipes can differ slightly.

Will a very small volume round to 0?

No. Below 1, the tool keeps four significant digits. For example, 0.001 mL in cubic meters shows 0.000000001 m³.
