What the Weight Converter Does
The tool converts a mass between seven units. It shows two result cards each time.
- Units: kilograms, grams, milligrams, pounds, ounces, stone, and metric tons.
- Converted Value: your number in the unit you chose.
- Base Weight in Kilograms: the same mass in kilograms.
- Convert Weight runs the conversion on demand.
The page converts once when it loads, using 70 kilograms to pounds. After that, the result updates as you type, when you change a unit, and when you press Enter.
How to Use It, Step by Step
- Type a number in Weight Value. The starting value is 70.
- Choose the unit you have in From Unit. It starts on Kilograms (kg).
- Choose the unit you want in To Unit. It starts on Pounds (lb).
- Read Converted Value, then check Base Weight in Kilograms.
- Press Convert Weight if you want to run the conversion again by hand.
The Weight Conversion Formula
The tool turns your value into kilograms first. Then it divides by the size of the target unit in kilograms.
Value×From Unit in kg÷To Unit in kg=Converted Value
- 1 g = 0.001 kg, and 1 mg = 0.000001 kg.
- 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, the exact international pound.
- 1 oz = 0.028349523125 kg, which is exactly one sixteenth of a pound.
- 1 st = 6.35029318 kg, which is exactly 14 pounds.
- 1 metric ton = 1,000 kg.
Every factor is an exact definition, so the only rounding comes from the display.
Worked Examples
Each row shows what the tool displays for the inputs given.
| Input | Calculation | Converted Value | Base Weight |
| 70 kg to lb | 70 ÷ 0.45359237 | 154.3236 lb | 70 kg |
| 150 lb to kg | 150 × 0.45359237 | 68.0389 kg | 68.0388555 kg |
| 10 st to lb | 10 × 6.35029318 = 63.5029318 kg, then ÷ 0.45359237 | 140 lb | 63.5029318 kg |
| 8 oz to g | 8 × 0.028349523125 = 0.226796185 kg, then ÷ 0.001 | 226.7962 g | 0.226796185 kg |
| 180 lb to st | 180 × 0.45359237 = 81.6466266 kg, then ÷ 6.35029318 | 12.8571 st | 81.6466266 kg |
| 1 mg to t | 1 × 0.000001 = 0.000001 kg, then ÷ 1000 | 0.000000001 t | 0.000001 kg |
The first row is the starting state of the page. Ten stone comes out as exactly 140 pounds, which confirms the 14 pound stone.
How to Read the Results
Converted Value shows up to four decimals and drops trailing zeros. It adds commas, so 2500.0000 shows as 2,500. The unit symbol follows the number, and the metric ton shows as t.
Base Weight in Kilograms is not rounded to three decimals. It shows up to 12 significant digits, so 500 mg reads 0.0005 kg. Use it as a quick cross-check, since one kilogram is about 2.2 pounds.
If Weight Value is blank or not a number, a red message appears and both cards read N/A. Tiny results keep their digits, and the tool never uses exponent form.
Mass, Weight, and Ton Confusion
In daily life, weight in kilograms or pounds really means mass. This tool converts mass units only. It does not adjust for gravity.
The ton option is the metric ton, also called a tonne, at 1,000 kg. It is not the US short ton of 2,000 pounds. It is also not the UK long ton of 2,240 pounds.
The ounce here is the common avoirdupois ounce for mass. It is not a fluid ounce, and it is not a troy ounce. Cooks should also note that cups and grams do not convert without a density.
The Unit Converter has a shorter weight list plus volume, speed, and temperature. For distances, use the Length Converter. Liquids measured by volume fit the Volume Converter. Energy in joules or calories is handled by the Energy Converter. Browse more in the unit and time converters hub.
Limitations and Assumptions
- Weight Value must be 0 or more. A negative number gets a red message and N/A.
- The largest accepted value is 1,000,000,000,000,000. Anything bigger is refused, so the tool never shows Infinity.
- US tons, UK tons, carats, grains, and troy ounces are not offered.
- Choosing the same unit twice is allowed and returns your value.
- The tool has no swap button, so change both menus yourself to reverse a conversion.
FAQs About the Weight Converter
Where is the stone unit used?
Stone is mainly used for body weight in the UK and Ireland. Most other countries use kilograms or pounds.
